Staying at Scandic Malmen (Södermalm, Stockholm)

Posted in Stockholm (E) by

When I went to Stockholm for a few summer days (mainly because I wanted to visit Birka and Skokloster Slott + also because I wanted to join the Urban Trail), I searched for budget-friendly accommodations. I had some conditions: I wanted a window, a spacious room and the hotel had to be reasonably central. In the end I found a spacious single room at Scandic Malmen for just 100 euros a night.

Central location

Scandic Malmen is located on Medborgarplatsen, in Södermalm. Around the corner you find the hipster neighborhood SoFo and in 10 minutes you can walk to Gamla Stan on foot. Whoever prefers public transport can just cross the street and you take the subway.

Breakfast at the hotel is extensive and offers fresh fruit and other classic hotel buffet things. There are alternatives for gluten-free or lactose-free diets.

So I had a single room with a bed of 1m40. The room was quite spacious but the mattras and the pillows need a replacement. The bathroom was just big enough. Always good at Scandic is that you get good quality shampoo and shower products. Also no complaints about the shower: the jet is powerful enough and you don’t have to wait too long to get hot water.

I can be brief about the view of my room at Scandic Malmen: that was actually just sad. The room looked out on an inner roof. There was a lot of noise in the hotel. The first night I heard quite a lot of noise: music with a solid bass. No idea where it came from. Furthermore, there was also an almost continuous ‘water’ sound. As if the upper neighbors were showering all the time. It could also be the aircondition but I did not see how to turn it off. Fortunately, I was so tired of the many steps in Stockholm that I still slept like a rose.
In short: Scandic Malmen is a good choice if you are looking for a centrally located hotel on Södermalm and you don’t want to pay a lot of money.
