Grillska Huset: lunch & fika in Gamla Stan (Stockholm)

Grillska Huset on Stortorget in Stockholm has a sunny terrace at the back of the restaurant.

Most tourists visiting Gamla Stan, Stockholm old town, stop for fika at Chokladkoppen I actually prefer to go to the other side of Stortorget. Stortorget is Stockholm’s Main Market Square. The sunny terrace and the cute houses of Chokladkoppen is what attracts people. What little people know is that Grillska Huset also has a sunny terrace!

The building dates back to the Middle Ages. Several major renovations have been done through the centuries. The Stockholm City Mission (Stadsmissionen) has been in the building since 1913. There is also a social component in the form of an employment project and social integration.

Update: in 2022 Grillska Huset Restaurang & Konditori AB took over.

Contrary of what you might think the name has nothing to do with a grill. The name comes from the Grill family. They bought this property at the end of the 17th century from merchant Hans Bremer. The most famous Grill was Claes, a banker and director of the East India Company. Together with his wife Anna Johanna, he organized parties in his house. Rumor goes that even queen Lovisa Ulrika was jealous of those events.

Nice to know: at Kungsträdgården there is a side house of Grillska Huset: Café Eugenia.

On the terrace of Grillska Huset

I ended up on the terrace by coincidence. Grillska Huset’s sun terrace is one of Gamla Stan’s best secrets. It is not very clear how you get there. I didn’t really expect a sunny spot between all the buildings, so the surprise was big when I discovered a sunny spot, out of the wind and away from all the crowds. Perfect for some relaxing while citytripping!

Lunch buffet

At Grillska Huset you have a large choice of sandwiches and other lunch dishes. On weekdays you can choose from different daily menus (dagens rätt) and a salad bar. Of course they also serve a lot of pastries. Here you get a real local feeling with typical Swedish dishes (husmanskost). Their coffee also gets positive comments.
